32 trees have been removed from Victoria Road in Saltaire. One of the reasons given is restoration of the history of Saltaire.
Reader, please come and have a look. The history of Saltaire does not include tarmac and a long row of parked cars. And the stone which will "restore" the pavement is not in accord with the York stone flags of the real Saltaire.
Bradford-born, I know full well
how good Bradford is at knocking itself down - my local Manchester Road library
and swimming-pool, two stations, Swan Arcade, Kirkgate Market. a wonderful
Central Library and Reading Room - and much much more, this is the story of my
Bradford life. And this latest officialised vandalism is true to form.
We lose 32 trees (some for good
reason) and get eight back, that's no deal, especially as we should be leaving
far more trees than we ourselves had, for our future generations.
The planting of six good
street-trees at the new Saltaire roundabout shows (ironically) what could be
done in Saltaire itself.
