What has
been achieved and what next?
The 392
survey results proved:
- Most people wanted to keep the existing trees and repair the paving;
- Most people felt the consultation was not wide enough;
- Only 19% of people felt their views had been considered
The 149
open comments show many people want replanting and they did not know only 8
trees would be replaced.
Many we
have spoken to also feel:
- Misled by the options offered
- Ill-informed at the consultation
- Upset by the refusal to widen consultation
One
councillor Kevin Warnes has conceded, following our survey results, that the consultation
was not as extensive as he and others have claimed and he seems to be open to a
review. This is good news. Thank you Kevin.
The tree
report used constantly to justify the decisions, does indicate that there were
other options. Options that were not offered in the consultation like nib
planting for example. The report explains that although removing trees would be
‘cheaper’ there would be negative impacts on wellbeing, health and the
ambience. The report also suggests that majority of the trees were healthy but
had been poorly maintained….
The
scrutiny report reveals that the councillors were urged by council officers to
disregard the pleas and petition with 309 signatures because of the threat of
jeopardising capital funds.
We have
questioned this threat… and still have no answer.
This
money thing seems odd to us….
It is
capital money that was earmarked until 2016 and could have been rolled over?
If
it could have been, then this was wrongly used to influence a decision that the
majority of people disagreed with and still disagree with.
