Is world heritage status at risk?

You may have seen Val Slater in the press announcing the replanting in the village. What her carefully worded press statement seems to omit is the number of trees. As we know this is UP to 8, a condition which has only come about through the work of the local Green Party. This in spite of the fact that even in the weak consultation the majority of responses wanted trees in some form.

Also today further updates were announced on the hydropower plans for Roberts Park. While we are fully supportive of renewable energy sources we have to question motivations. The park (alongside the college) falls into the bufferzone of the UNESCO site. Does this not compromise our World Heritage Status? The removal of the trees has greatly altered the feel of our village - as will the, significantly larger than proposed, college building.

These changes alongside the decision to install lampposts not fitting with the world heritage status lead us to ask questions about the executive committees motivations.

Does it suit the council for the status to be removed? It has been suggested to is that this is something the council would welcome as then they could extend the bypass through Hirst wood (and our ancient woodland)... Unfortunately we aren't privy to their thoughts. However we will be present at the meeting on the 25th and hope you will be there too ...

7pm at Saltaire Methodist Church 25th February.
